Colin Gibbs
Colin Gibbs is a highly regarded artist whose creative journey spans several decades, marked by two distinct phases. In his early years, Gibbs was an avid painter. However, after a significant exhibition at the Sargent Gallery, he became disillusioned when his work was repeatedly compared to other artists, leading him to destroy his paintings. This hiatus lasted for a number of years until a profound moment of reconnection with his roots in the Whanganui region. With the support of his wife, who performed a karakia over him, Gibbs rediscovered his passion for painting.
“I always like to work with a theme that has taken my breath away… when it captures me beyond my brain, it opens up the door for creativity.”
For Gibbs, creativity is deeply intertwined with a sense of connectedness—to the land, to cultural and social issues, and to the arts, including music and poetry. His process is intuitive, driven by themes that resonate deeply with him, often those that “take his breath away.” This emotional and spiritual engagement with his work allows him to channel his energy into his art, creating pieces that are both personal and profound. Gibbs’ art is not just a visual expression but a reflection of his journey, capturing the essence of his experiences and his deep connection to the world around him.
